Aldi or Lidl? How AI Answers, and Who It Cites

Germany's eternal shopping question, put to the machines: we ran six shopping queries through Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity, and swept both brands through Baseline mention scans. The result, as of late July 2026: ask about price and the answer is Aldi. Ask about quality and it tilts to Lidl. And across 17 AI answers, neither aldi.de nor lidl.de was cited a single time. Reddit threads and YouTube tests write the verdict; the German consumer press fills in the numbers. When AI passes judgement on you, someone else supplies the evidence.

Two questions, two winners

The setup, in two sentences. On 25 July 2026, six German- and English-language shopping queries each ran once through Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity; 17 of 18 runs succeeded. The accompanying mention scans swept the public web, drawing on predominantly English-language sources, so the mention mix skews international (UK/US) rather than purely German.

The engine tests came back clear, just split down the middle. On the price axis, Aldi is named first in six of seven answers and wins the comparison outright. On the quality axis, both ChatGPT and Perplexity side with Lidl: fresh produce, bakery, premium own-brand ranges. The same two brands get two opposite verdicts, depending on how the question is phrased.

Perplexity (German query, our translation):
"If your main concern is the lowest price on the standard range, Aldi is often slightly ahead" … "Lidl, if you'd rather have more choice, more branded products and often more attractive promotions."

ChatGPT (English query, verbatim):
"while Aldi tends to be cheaper, Lidl often offers better quality products"

ChatGPT (German query, our translation):
"In Germany the cheapest supermarkets are generally Aldi and Lidl, followed by Penny and Netto Marken-Discount."

Nobody cites the brand's own site

The footnotes are the more interesting data. Our visibility report from the same day does the arithmetic: across the 17 successful comparison answers, aldi.de was cited zero times, for a visibility score of 0.0. lidl.de never appears in the answer citations either.

Zero. Across seventeen answers.

The evidence comes instead from reddit.com, youtube.com, the German consumer press (derwesten.de, kreiszeitung.de, stern.de, chip.de, focus.de, wiwo.de) and expat comparison guides. Reddit appears in five of seven answers, and a single r/LidlUS thread about ground beef supplies the quality evidence for ChatGPT and Perplexity alike — one forum thread carrying the burden of proof on both engines. The duel doesn't stay a duel either: unprompted, the engines pull Penny, Netto, Edeka and Rewe into the answers. We've taken apart why AI answers almost always invite the competition in. And if you're counting on your Google rankings, ranking #1 on Google doesn't stop you being invisible in AI answers.

The open web that writes the answer

The mention scans (standard depth, public web, captured 25 July 2026) show what the engines are drawing from. Aldi lands 372 mentions to Lidl's 300, at near-identical tone (average sentiment +0.19 vs +0.16). On the open web, the brands' own domains do show up: 55 Aldi mentions on owned domains, 26 for Lidl. The web talks about the brands, and the brands join in. In this test, only sources that evaluate got cited.

Both brands' biggest risks also sit where no press release can reach. For Aldi, the scan flagged recurring meat and produce-quality complaints on Reddit (an r/CasualUK thread titled "People that DON'T shop at Aldi or Lidl") as the largest single risk. For Lidl it is a Humane League UK campaign video about a German chicken supplier, circulating on Facebook. Both are exactly the kind of material that can surface as evidence in tomorrow's AI answer.

Roughly €71.7bn between them, and AI is doing the shopping too

Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd together turned over €36.9bn in Germany in 2025 (+2.9%); Lidl made €34.81bn (+3.6%), for roughly €71.7bn between the two. Globally, Lidl is bigger still: Schwarz Group reports €140.2bn in Lidl store revenue for fiscal 2025 (up 6.1%), with more than 3,250 stores in Germany alone. German discounters as a group held 38% market share in 2024 and took €97.7bn of the €209.7bn organised food retail market. Retail professor Thomas Roeb argues that, given Lidl's scale, there is no logical basis left for treating Aldi as the leading discounter. And the contest is measurably shifting: between January 2024 and September 2025, Lidl's share of discounter store visits fell from 14.7% to 13.4%, while Aldi held steady and Penny climbed from 3.7% to 4.4%.

Meanwhile, shopping advice is moving into the chatbots, and the German numbers say so plainly. Deloitte found 52% of German consumers using AI-supported shopping aids online in 2026, up from 44% in September 2025. The HDE Online Monitor 2026 puts 35% of people in Germany researching products with AI tools before buying. And per Bitkom, 67% of Germans aged 16+ were using generative AI at least occasionally by spring 2025, up from 40% the previous summer. A brand that optimises only for classic search results is optimising past a channel that is visibly growing.

Counted again every week

Every platform number above is a dated snapshot from 25 July 2026. The chart below is not: it redraws itself straight from our platform each time a fresh weekly scan lands (jobs #391/#392, next run 27 July 2026, auto-pause after 26 runs). Whether Aldi keeps its mentions lead is something you can watch happen. For how this kind of duel plays out in a different industry, see our Revolut vs Monzo comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Does AI really say Aldi is cheaper than Lidl?
In our 25 July 2026 test, six of seven price answers named Aldi first. ChatGPT's English answer put it plainly: "while Aldi tends to be cheaper, Lidl often offers better quality products". That is one single-shot run per engine, not a standing verdict. The live tracker above shows how the numbers move.
Why doesn't AI cite aldi.de or lidl.de?
The engines prefer to back comparison verdicts with sources that evaluate rather than sell: Reddit threads, YouTube tests, consumer press. Across our 17 answers, neither brand domain appeared once, even though both are present on the open web (55 and 26 owned-domain mentions respectively, as of 25 July 2026).
How current are the numbers in this article?
All platform figures come from scans captured on 25 July 2026 and are dated as such in the text. The tracker in this article updates itself weekly, for up to 26 runs. Public market and revenue figures are linked to their sources directly in the text.

When AI passes judgement, supply the evidence

Aldi wins the price question, Lidl wins the quality question, and neither brand appears in the sources the answer is built from. That, as of late July 2026, is the state of the most visible brand question in German retail. Every other brand plays on the same field: what AI says about you is decided in threads, tests and articles you don't write. You can still see it happening.
