AI Overviews
AI Overviews are the generated answer blocks Google places above its ordinary search results, condensing an answer into a few sentences and linking to a small set of supporting pages. Google launched them to all United States users on 14 May 2024 and said it expected to reach over a billion people by the end of that year[1]. Google's documentation says a page needs no extra markup or special optimisation to be used as a source, because the systems draw on pages that already rank for the query[2]. Measured prevalence has moved a great deal since launch, and the effect on click-through is disputed between Google and independent panels.
Rollout
Google ran the feature as the Search Generative Experience inside Search Labs before launch, and says people used it billions of times there[3]. General availability in the United States followed on 14 May 2024, reaching hundreds of millions of users that week[1]. Expansion took it to more than 100 countries by 28 October 2024, and to over 200 countries and territories and more than 40 languages by May 2025[4].
A second surface, AI Mode, replaces the results page with a conversational answer. Google announced it in March 2025 for United States users who opted in through Search Labs, and it graduated to all US searchers on 20 May 2025[5]. Expansion abroad followed through 2025: India in June, then more than 35 new languages and over 40 further countries and territories from October[6].

Share of queries
Prevalence estimates disagree by method. Semrush and Datos, working from more than 10 million US keywords, put AI Overviews on 6.49% of desktop queries in January 2025 and 13.14% in March, a doubling in two months[7]. The same panel recorded a peak just under 25% of queries in July 2025, then a pullback to under 16% by November[8]. A Pew Research Center panel of 900 US adults, covering 68,879 real searches in March 2025, found an AI summary on about 18% of them[9].
What triggers an overview shifted over the same period. Informational queries were 91% of the triggering mix in January 2025 and 57% by October, while commercial queries rose from 8% to 18% and transactional from 2% to 14%[10].
Effect on clicks
Pew found users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits to a page carrying an AI summary, against 15% of visits where none appeared[11], and clicked a link inside the summary itself on 1% of visits[12]. Google rejected the study, describing its methodology and queryset as unrepresentative of Search traffic and saying AI Overviews reach 1.5 billion monthly users while Search directs billions of clicks to websites daily[13]. The Semrush comparison points the other way: measured across the same keyword set in January and March 2025, the zero-click rate fell from 38.1% to 36.2% rather than rising[14].
How sources are chosen
Google states there are no additional requirements for appearing in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimisation beyond ordinary Search practice[2]. Underneath, both surfaces may use query fan-out, issuing several related searches across subtopics and data sources before composing one response[15]. That widens the pool of pages a single answer can cite beyond the ranked results for the original query, and it is the mechanism most generative engine optimisation advice is built on.
