AI Mode
AI Mode is a conversational answer surface inside Google Search. Google launched it as a Search Labs experiment on 5 March 2025 on a custom version of Gemini 2.0[1] and opened it to all United States searchers at Google I/O on 20 May 2025[2]. It answers a prompt by running many background searches at once, a technique Google calls query fan-out[3], then returns a written response with a short set of supporting links. Measured behaviour departs sharply from ordinary search: a panel of 69 million United States desktop sessions found 92% to 94% of AI Mode sessions ended with no click to an external site[4].
Rollout
AI Mode reached Google One AI Premium subscribers through Search Labs on 5 March 2025[1], then every United States searcher without a Labs sign-up on 20 May 2025[2]. On 21 August 2025 Google took it to 180 countries and territories in English[5]. A second expansion on 7 October 2025 added more than 35 languages and over 40 countries, putting the total past 200 countries and territories[6]. On 18 November 2025 Google made Gemini 3 Pro selectable in AI Mode through a Thinking option for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the United States[7].
Query fan-out and Deep Search
Google describes the core mechanism as issuing multiple related searches concurrently across subtopics and multiple data sources, then bringing those results together[3]. Deep Search applies the same method at greater depth and can issue hundreds of searches for one prompt[8]. Gemini 3 widened the fan-out again and lets AI Mode generate an interactive layout for a response[7]. The consequence for publishers is that a page is retrieved against sub-queries the user never typed, which is why query fan-out is treated as a target in its own right.
Agentic features
I/O 2025 added task completion built on Project Mariner, starting with buying event tickets through partners including Ticketmaster, StubHub, Resy and Vagaro[9]. Restaurant reservations followed on 21 August 2025 for Google AI Ultra subscribers in the United States, checking live availability across booking platforms including OpenTable, Resy and Tock[10]. These flows read third-party booking sites and act on them, so a site can supply the data behind an answer without receiving the visit.
Effect on clicks
Semrush analysed 69 million Google sessions from United States desktop panellists between 1 May and 5 July 2025. AI Mode sessions ended without an outbound click 92% to 94% of the time, against about 43% for a search carrying an AI Overview and about 34% for a search without one[4]. Adoption over the same window was small but climbing, from 0.25% of sessions in early May to a little over 1% by early July[11]. Prompts averaged 7.22 words against 4.0 for ordinary search[12]. Longer prompts with fewer clicks is the pattern zero-click search describes, at its sharpest so far.
Difference from AI Overviews
An AI Overview is a block above the classic result list for a query typed into normal Search. AI Mode is a separate tab holding a conversation, where follow-up prompts keep context. Google says a page needs only to be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear as a supporting link in either surface, and that no AI text file or extra schema.org markup makes it eligible[13]. Google also reported AI Overviews driving over a 10% increase in usage of Google in the United States and India, for the query types where they appear[14], a vendor figure with no independent replication.
