Google

Entity in AI search and SEO
Volatile, last checked 2026-09-04 This page carries measured figures that move quickly.Reviewed 2026-09-04

Google is the search engine most of the web's organic traffic passes through, and since 2024 it has also been an answer engine: AI Overviews sit above the ranked results and AI Mode replaces them with a generated answer. StatCounter measured its worldwide share at 91.1% in August 2026[1]. Google's published position is that the generated surfaces are not a separate discipline, and that optimising for them is still SEO[2].

Share of search

StatCounter's August 2026 sample gives Google 91.1% of worldwide search referrals, against 4.5% for Bing, 1.23% for Yahoo!, 0.99% for Yandex and 0.7% for DuckDuckGo[1]. At that concentration a change to one company's result page moves most measurable organic traffic; search market share tracks the split.

AI Overviews and AI Mode

AI Mode opened as a United States Search Labs opt-in in March 2025 and reached every searcher in the United States without an opt-in on 20 May 2025[3]. Both surfaces may run a query fan-out, issuing several related searches across subtopics to assemble the supporting pages, and Google states a page can only be cited if it is already indexed and eligible for an ordinary snippet[4]. Answering Pew's zero-click findings in July 2025, Google said it still sends billions of clicks to websites daily and had seen no significant drop in aggregate web traffic[5].

Crawlers

Googlebot is the crawler that builds the search index, and the crawl preferences set for it govern Search, Discover, Images, Video and News together[6]. A second token, Google-Extended, controls whether crawled content may train future Gemini models and ground answers at prompt time; Google says it has no effect on inclusion in Search and is not a ranking signal[7]. Blocking it in robots.txt is therefore a decision about model training and grounding, not about Search visibility; AI crawlers covers the wider set of tokens. Google framed the chatbot then called Bard, later renamed Gemini, as a complement to Search[8].

Antitrust

On 5 August 2024 Judge Amit Mehta held that Google had acted illegally to maintain a monopoly in general search services and general text advertising[9]. As of early 2026 Google and the Department of Justice have each appealed different parts of Mehta's ruling, Google against the monopoly judgment and the government still arguing the company should be split up[10]. The remedies themselves are covered at Google antitrust remedies.

Google on optimisation

Google's optimisation guide for its generative features says plainly that from Search's perspective, optimising for generative AI search is optimising for the search experience and is still SEO[2]. SEO and GEO sets that statement against the measured overlap. It is an interested party's account of its own product, so it is evidence rather than settlement.
