Reddit is a forum network whose archive of first-hand opinion has become one of the most cited domains in AI answers and one of the most visible in Google. A March 2026 study of 30 million cited sources across five engines ranked it first among all domains[1], and it licenses its content to both Google and OpenAI[2]. The same position makes it a plaintiff: it is suing Perplexity and Anthropic over content taken without a licence.

Visibility in Google

Reddit's US Google visibility grew 1,328% between July 2023 and April 2024, moving from 85th to 5th in the Sistrix index, with estimated US organic visits rising from 57 million to 427 million a month[3]. It was still the 4th most visible domain in July 2026, but the rise had stopped and turned into a downward trend[4]. Reddit's own IPO filing names search algorithm changes as a business risk, against an average 73.1 million daily active uniques in the fourth quarter of 2023[5]. On the third-quarter 2025 earnings call, chief executive Steve Huffman put the split at about half direct and half from Google, called external search flat, and said AI chatbots were not driving traffic[6].

Data licensing

Google expanded its partnership with Reddit on 22 February 2024, taking Data API access to real-time structured content while Reddit adopted Vertex AI for its own features[2]. OpenAI announced a comparable deal on 16 May 2024: Data API access to surface Reddit content in ChatGPT, advertising on Reddit, and Reddit building features on OpenAI models, with no financial terms given[7]. Reddit sells licensed access to the same posts its own lawsuits accuse other companies of taking without one.

Share of AI citations

A Peec AI study published in March 2026, covering 30 million cited sources across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews, ranked Reddit first among cited domains, ahead of YouTube and LinkedIn[1]. A 5W synthesis of nine datasets, including a Similarweb sample of about 600,000 citation events from January to February 2026, put Reddit at 11.97% of US ChatGPT citations, second to Wikipedia at 13.15%[8]. Those shares are unstable: Promptwatch tracking reported by Semrush measured Reddit at 3.8% of ChatGPT citations from 18 July to 7 August 2026 and 0.5% from 14 to 17 August, a fall Promptwatch itself called provisional and which OpenAI answered by saying it holds no fixed visibility level for any site[9]. Any single number for citation share is one method reading one window.

Litigation over scraping

Reddit sued Perplexity and three scraping intermediaries, Oxylabs, AWMProxy and SerpApi, on 22 October 2025 in the Southern District of New York, pleading vicarious and contributory infringement and anti-circumvention under the DMCA over content scraped out of Google search results; the docket had produced no public rulings when the case tracker was last checked in June 2026[10]. It sued Anthropic on 4 June 2025 in San Francisco Superior Court for breach of contract, unjust enrichment, trespass to chattels, tortious interference and unfair competition, alleging scraping between December 2021 and October 2024 and more than 100,000 unauthorised API calls[11].
