AI search - Referral traffic

ChatGPT's AI audience shrank. Its referral share did not

Between June 2025 and May 2026, ChatGPT's share of visits to AI chatbot websites fell from about 76% to roughly 53%, as Gemini and Claude grew. Over the same twelve months, its share of the clicks those chatbots send on to other websites went from 79.86% to 79.05%. It barely moved. The engine people are switching to and the engine that sends you visitors are, for now, two different questions, and most of the confusion about AI referral traffic comes from treating them as one.

Who people visit is not who sends you clicks

There are two public scoreboards for AI assistants, and they measure opposite ends of the same session. Similarweb counts visits to the chatbot websites (chatgpt.com, gemini.google.com, claude.ai and so on) from its panel of devices. Statcounter counts clicks from those chatbots that land on the websites running its tracking code, which it says covers over 1.5 million sites. The first is an audience measure. The second is the one that shows up in your analytics.

Put the same month side by side and they disagree about almost everything except who is first. In May 2026 Similarweb had ChatGPT at 52.7% of generative-AI web traffic, Gemini at 27.3% and Claude at 8.9%. Statcounter's referral data for the same month had ChatGPT at 79.05%, Perplexity at 7.67%, Gemini at 7.04% and Claude at 2.99%.

Perplexity is the outlier in the useful direction. It had 1.3% of chatbot visits and nearly six times that share of the clicks, which fits a product built around numbered source links. DeepSeek is the opposite: 4.0% of visits and effectively none of the clicks.

Gemini is the one engine whose clicks are catching up with its audience

Statcounter's monthly series starts in April 2025. Over the seventeen months since, ChatGPT's referral share has stayed in a band between 76.85% and 84.21%. Everything interesting has happened underneath it. Gemini went from 2.31% of referral clicks in April 2025 to 10.93% in August 2026. Perplexity went the other way, from 12.07% to 4.34%. Claude rose from 0.3% to a peak of 3.74% in June 2026 and was at 2.53% in August.

So the audience shift is real, and it is starting to reach websites, but slowly and mostly through Google. Claude's audience grew more than fivefold on Similarweb's numbers while its share of referral clicks never passed 4%.

All of this is fighting over a quarter of one percent

Statcounter also publishes a series that puts search engines, social networks and AI chatbots in one pot, as a share of the referrals all three send to websites. In August 2026 AI chatbots had 0.25% of it. Search had 91.65% and social 8.1%. The AI share peaked at 0.43% in April and May 2026 and has fallen back since, to roughly where it was a year earlier.

That is a count of clicks, not of value, and there is a real argument that an AI visitor is worth more than a search visitor. We went through the evidence for and against in AI sends less traffic, but it is worth more. On volume alone, though, the arithmetic is blunt: at these aggregate shares, a 0.3% dip in search referrals is worth more clicks than every chatbot sends combined.

Why the sources disagree

Neither dataset is wrong. They count different events on different populations, and each has a blind spot the other does not.

Similarweb is a panel measuring visits to the chatbots. Its own summary, published on 29 July 2026, says ChatGPT's share of generative-AI website visits fell from about 76% in June 2025 to roughly 53% by May 2026, with Gemini rising from under 9% to around 27 to 28% and Claude from barely 2% to close to 9%. It counts website visits, so a conversation that happens inside a phone app or inside another Google product is outside it, and it says nothing about whether the person ever clicked a link.

Statcounter is a tag measuring clicks that arrive. It reads the referrer on page views across the sites running its counter, which it put at 3.8 billion page views a month on over 1.5 million websites when it launched the series in June 2025. That makes it the closer match to what your own analytics will show. It also means it only sees clicks that carry a referrer. A click from an app that strips it lands as direct traffic, in Statcounter and in your reports alike.

Enterprise analytics land higher again for ChatGPT. Conductor's 2026 benchmark, which we covered in our piece on what AI visitors are worth, put ChatGPT at 87.4% of all AI referral traffic. Its traffic numbers come from 1,215 of its own enterprise customers' domains between May and September 2025, when Statcounter had ChatGPT between 79.79% and 82.65%. Bigger commercial sites, a different mix of engines.

The gap between the two scoreboards is itself the finding. An engine can win the conversation without sending the click, and at the moment Gemini, Claude and DeepSeek all do more of the first than the second. We tracked the audience side of this in the state of GEO in 2026. This post is the other half: the side that reaches your server.
