Builds the index behind Perplexity answers. Blocking it removes you from the source pool Perplexity cites. Perplexity publishes official IP ranges after earlier third-party reports of undeclared fetching, so claimed hits can now be verified.

What it feeds

PerplexityBot indexes pages so that Perplexity can surface and link them in its answers.[1] Perplexity separates that job from model training and states that the crawler is not used to gather content for foundation models.[2]

How to identify it

The declared user agent names the token and points at a documentation URL.[3] Perplexity publishes the ranges it crawls from as a JSON file, which is the only reliable check: the name in a log line is a claim any client can make.[4]

Blocking and its consequences

Disallowing PerplexityBot in robots.txt takes the site out of the pool Perplexity cites. It does not stop Perplexity-User, the separate token used when a person asks about a specific page.

A user agent is a claim, not a proof: any client can send any name. Where an operator publishes IP ranges, a reverse lookup is the only way to tell a real visit from an impersonation.
